In conjunction with Swimming Queensland, we provide opportunities for swimmers to enhance their skills, refine their technique, and gain valuable racing experience alongside peers from across the state.
We also actively support the professional growth of our coaches and technical officials, fostering a strong and knowledgeable network across the region. All of this takes place in a positive and inclusive environment, guided by our dedicated Swimming Qld and Wide Bay coaching community.
Swimming Wide Bay’s Development Squads are designed to recognise and support emerging talent across the region. Swimmers are selected based on their performances during the qualifying period from April to March, with squad age determined as of the end of the qualifying season in March.
The Stingers Squad is for swimmers aged 9 to 11 years who have achieved at least a Swim Australia Junior Excellence (JX) Blue time standard during the selection period. This squad offers young swimmers their first step into the development pathway, encouraging skill progression and a love for the sport in a fun and supportive environment.
The Sharks Squad recognises swimmers aged 12 to 13 years who have achieved a minimum Swim Australia Junior Excellence (JX) Bronze time standard during the selection period. This squad focuses on further developing race skills, technique, and competitive confidence while fostering teamwork and connection with peers across the region.
The Piranhas Squad is for swimmers aged 14 years and over who have competed in at least one individual event at the Queensland State Championships. This squad provides high-level development to enhance performance, refine race strategies, and prepare athletes for future elite competition.
The ‘Battle of Brisbane’ (Bob) Development and Competition Day, formerly the Patron Shield, is an exciting day of racing and camaraderie.
The event showcases a thrilling mix of individual and relay races as three strong Brisbane teams compete against the top 9-12-year-old swimmers from Wide Bay.
The day culminates in a fierce head-to-head showdown in the pool, with the winning team claiming the Battle of Brisbane Trophy.
Alongside the competition, parents are often invited to attend a special session designed to support the development of their young athletes and enhance their performance.
The 24 for 32 Squad is designed to support the growth of regional athletes by offering access to advanced training and educational resources.
This initiative is focused on equipping athletes with high-performance strategies, led by experts with experience at both the National Team and State Academy levels, to help them reach their full potential.
Under the leadership of Swimming Queensland’s Brant Best, the program provides athletes with top-tier training and race strategies, empowering them to incorporate these skills into their daily training routines and competition settings.
Technical officials are integral to the success of our swimming community. They ensure that every swim meet runs smoothly and meets the highest standards.
Becoming a technical official is a rewarding way to stay engaged in your child’s swimming journey. It also gives you the best view of exciting races from the sidelines.
Swimming Wide Bay is currently seeking individuals eager to contribute to the sport and the community by taking on this critical role.
Swimming Wide Bay is excited to launch a new initiative focused on developing the next generation of coaching talent. Through specialized clinics and personalized one-on-one mentorship, we empower our coaches to unlock their athletes’ full potential and guide them toward success in competition.
This initiative is designed to foster a culture of continuous learning and growth, equipping coaches with the tools and strategies needed to deliver exceptional training. By supporting our coaches in their professional development, we ensure they are well-prepared to guide athletes at every stage of their journey.
